Hip hop has always been loud about friendship. The people who were there before the money, the friends who aren't here anymore, the ones who turned out to be fake: rappers have written about all of them for forty years.
Below are 13 rap songs about friends, grouped by what they're about: loyalty, best friends, lost friends and fake friends. For each one we give the artist, the year and what the song is about. We don't quote lyrics (they're copyrighted), so press play on your streaming app of choice. After the list, you'll find original lines to write a friendship rap of your own, and how to turn it into a two-person video starring you and your best friend.
A heads-up: most of these songs have explicit versions. If you're sharing them with family or at work, look for the clean edit.
Rap songs about friendship and loyalty
Whodini, "Friends" (1984). The Brooklyn group's single from the album Escape asks one question for the whole song: how many of the people around you are really your friends? It's one of the earliest rap hits built entirely around friendship, and the question still holds up.
Drake, "Started from the Bottom" (2013). A success song, but the point is who's still standing next to him. Drake credits the same circle that was there at the start, and the "whole team" idea became shorthand for staying loyal to day-one friends.
Hip hop songs for best friends
Saweetie, "Best Friend" featuring Doja Cat (2021). The best-friend hype song: two friends gassing each other up and refusing to let the other one doubt themselves. It's the one people post with their best friend on birthdays. Explicit, so pick the clean edit for the family group chat.
Chance the Rapper, "Same Drugs" (2016). From Coloring Book, and despite the title it isn't about drugs. It uses Peter Pan, Wendy and the film Hook as a metaphor for growing up and growing apart. It's the song for a friendship that changed, told with more nostalgia than bitterness.

Rap songs about lost friends
Some of the most famous friendship songs in rap are tributes. They're sad, but people come back to them because they say what's hard to say at a funeral.
Pete Rock & CL Smooth, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" (1992). A tribute to Troy "Trouble T Roy" Dixon, a dancer with Heavy D & the Boyz who died in 1990. Its horn loop is one of the most recognizable sounds in 90s hip hop, and the song is a model of how to remember a friend with warmth instead of only grief.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, "Tha Crossroads" (1996). Written for Eazy-E, the group's mentor, and for friends and family members they'd lost. It won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
2Pac, "Life Goes On" (1996). From All Eyez on Me. 2Pac remembers friends who died young and thinks about how he'd want to be remembered. It's a mourning song with a toast in it.
Puff Daddy & Faith Evans featuring 112, "I'll Be Missing You" (1997). The tribute to The Notorious B.I.G., built on The Police's "Every Breath You Take." It became one of the biggest rap singles of the decade and is still played at memorials.
Master P featuring Pimp C, Silkk the Shocker and others, "I Miss My Homies" (1997). The lead single from Ghetto D, built on a sample of The O'Jays' "Brandy." A slow, open-hearted song about friends who are gone. It reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, "See You Again" (2015). Written for Furious 7 as a goodbye to actor Paul Walker. It works for any friend you've lost, which is why it's played at so many graduations and farewells.
Rap songs about fake friends
DJ Khaled featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, "No New Friends" (2013). The anthem for keeping your circle closed. Everyone on it says the same thing: the people who showed up late don't get in.
Kanye West, "Real Friends" (2016). From The Life of Pablo. Kanye looks at friends and relatives who only call when they need something, and admits he hasn't always been a good friend either. It even nods to Whodini's "Friends." It's more honest than angry.
Drake, "Fake Love" (2016). The lead single from the 2017 mixtape More Life. About people who act close when things are good and disappear when they aren't. The title became the caption for every friendship that went sour.
Write your own friendship rap
The songs above are about other people's friends. The best one for yours is the one you write. Each couplet below is original, clean and 22 words or fewer, so it fits one verse in a standard 12-second AI rap video. Swap in real names, places and inside jokes.
Best friends
- Met you in the lunch line, you stole my fries / ten years later, you still steal 'em, I still act surprised
- You're the one I call when the news is good or bad / the only friend who's seen me ugly-cry over a salad
- We don't need a plan, we just need a ride / you bring the snacks, I bring the playlist, hop inside
- Different cities now, but the group chat's still loud / three voice notes a day, and I'm still your biggest crowd
- You knew my old phone number, my worst haircut too / still picked me for your team, that's what real friends do
- You talk me out of texting the ex every time / that's not just friendship, that should be a paid full-time
- Same jokes since high school, still laughing at the end / got a lot of people, only one best friend
- If I'm in trouble, you're already on the way / didn't even ask what happened, said "I'm coming, OK"
- You hype my bad ideas like they're genius plans / then you help me clean the mess with your own two hands
- Day one, day two, every day since then / if I had to start again, I'd pick you again
- We fight about the music, never 'bout the friendship / you skip my songs, I skip yours, but we never skip it
- Matching bracelets from a summer that we can't forget / twenty years later, we're still not finished yet
Fake friends (keep it playful)
- Only text me when you need a ride across town / funny how your phone breaks when it's my turn to get around
- You liked my post, but you didn't come to the show / fans online, but in real life, you're a no-show
- You said you got my back, then you borrowed my jacket / haven't seen it since, so I wrote you this little track
- You call me best friend when the bill comes due / then you're in the bathroom till the waiter's through
Keep the fake-friend lines about things anyone could do, not about a real person you're angry at. A video naming someone for real is a callout, not a joke.
Hooks to shout together
- "Day ones only!"
- "Still my best friend!"
- "Ride or die!"
- "No new friends!"
- "Same crew forever!"

Turn it into a best-friend rap video
A friendship rap is better when you both perform it. In Kiravu, each of you gets a verse:
- Open the AI rap generator and pick Duo mode (one selfie each) or Duo from one photo (one picture of the two of you side by side).
- Pick the best friends topic for ready-made lyrics, or paste your own: person 1 raps verse 1, person 2 raps verse 2, and you shout the hook together at the end.
- Choose a stage. The orange booth gives you the Hotel Lobby AI look; Rooftop at night and House party suit friendship songs too.
- Choose a beat: Trap for hype, Boom bap for a 90s feel, Melodic for something sung and sentimental.
- Render. A standard song (12 seconds at 720p) costs 10 credits and usually takes 2 to 5 minutes.

Only upload photos of yourself and of friends who said yes, and show them the video before you post it. You'll get a vertical MP4 with no watermark, ready for TikTok, Reels or the group chat.
