A great rap duo is more than two people sharing a mic. The best ones split the work in a way that makes each of them sound better: a rapper and a DJ, a calm voice and a wild one, two brothers who finish each other's lines.
Below are the 20 hip hop duos we'd play for anyone who asked where to start. It's a list of two-member acts only, so trios and crews are out. The order is our call, weighted toward influence and albums that still hold up. Every fact here was checked against the sources at the bottom of the page on October 25, 2026.

The 20 best rap duos, in order
1. OutKast
André 3000 and Big Boi, Atlanta. The two met at a performing arts high school and formed OutKast in 1992. Their debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994), put Atlanta on the rap map, and the double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below won Album of the Year at the 2004 Grammys, the first time a rap group took that award. They're number one because they never made the same record twice, and because each of them sounds like nobody else.
2. Eric B. & Rakim
DJ Eric B. and rapper Rakim, Long Island, New York. Formed in 1986, they released Paid in Full in 1987 with "Eric B. Is President" and "I Ain't No Joke" on it, then Follow the Leader a year later. Rakim's calm, internal-rhyme style changed what rapping could sound like, and the title track's drums have been sampled ever since.
3. Mobb Deep
Prodigy and Havoc, Queensbridge, New York. They formed the group in 1991, and The Infamous (1995) made them legends. Havoc produced most of it, including "Shook Ones, Pt. II", one of the most recognizable beats in rap. Prodigy died in 2017.
4. Gang Starr
Guru and DJ Premier, Brooklyn by way of Boston and Texas. Guru started Gang Starr in Boston, then rebuilt it with Premier in 1989. Step in the Arena (1991), Hard to Earn (1994, with "Mass Appeal") and Moment of Truth (1998, a top-10 album) are the run to hear. Premier's chopped samples behind Guru's steady voice became a template for a whole era.
5. UGK
Pimp C and Bun B, Port Arthur, Texas. UGK (Underground Kingz) formed in 1987. Ridin' Dirty (1996) is the Southern rap classic, and their self-titled 2007 album went to No. 1 with "Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You)" featuring OutKast. Pimp C died a few months after that album came out.
6. Clipse
Pusha T and Malice, brothers from Virginia Beach. Their debut Lord Willin' (2002) and its single "Grindin'" were produced by The Neptunes, as was Hell Hath No Fury (2006). After splitting in 2010, they came back with Let God Sort Em Out in July 2025, produced entirely by Pharrell Williams. Few duos have returned that strong after 15 years.
7. Run the Jewels
Killer Mike and El-P. An Atlanta rapper and a Brooklyn rapper-producer, they released their self-titled debut in 2013 as a free download, then Run the Jewels 2 (2014), 3 (2016) and RTJ4 (2020), which reached the top 10 in the US and the UK. They prove a duo can form late in two careers and still become the main event.
8. EPMD
Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith, Brentwood, Long Island. The name stands for "Erick and Parrish Making Dollars". Their 1988 debut Strictly Business, with "You Gots to Chill", went gold. Laid-back delivery over funk loops became their trademark.
9. Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Producer Pete Rock and rapper CL Smooth, Mount Vernon, New York. They met at Mount Vernon High School. Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992) holds "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)", a tribute to their friend Trouble T Roy of Heavy D & the Boyz, who died in 1990. It's on almost every list of the greatest rap songs.
10. Black Star
Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli. Their only album as a duo, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star (1998, Rawkus Records), led with "Definition", produced by Hi-Tek. The name comes from Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line shipping company. It's a cornerstone of late-90s independent rap.
11. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince
Jeff Townes and Will Smith, West Philadelphia. They met at a house party in 1985 when Jeff's usual MC didn't show up. "Parents Just Don't Understand" won the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1989, and "Summertime" (1991) won them another. Funny, clean storytelling was their lane.
12. Method Man & Redman
Method Man (Wu-Tang Clan) and Redman (Def Squad). Their joint album Blackout! (1999) opened in the top three of the Billboard 200 and led to the 2001 film How High. They followed it with Blackout! 2 in 2009. Two high-energy voices that never step on each other.
13. 8Ball & MJG
8Ball and MJG, Memphis. They met in middle school in 1984 and debuted with Comin' Out Hard (1993). On Top of the World (1995) reached the top 10 and went gold, carried by "Space Age Pimpin'". A blueprint for Southern rap duos that came after.
14. Madvillain
MF DOOM and Madlib. Madvillainy (2004, Stones Throw) is their only studio album: short, odd songs, many under two minutes, with DOOM's dense rhymes over Madlib's dusty loops. It became Stones Throw's best-selling rap album and one of the most influential underground records of the 2000s.
15. Capone-N-Noreaga
Capone and Noreaga, Queens, New York. The War Report (1997) cast their neighborhood as a war zone over gritty boom-bap and reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200. Their mentor Tragedy Khadafi produced much of it.
16. Smif-N-Wessun
Tek and Steele, Brooklyn. Part of the Boot Camp Clik, they released Dah Shinin' in January 1995, with beats by Da Beatminerz and the underground hit "Bucktown". It helped define the dark Brooklyn sound of the mid-90s.
17. Kris Kross
Chris Kelly and Chris Smith, Atlanta. Their first single, "Jump" (1992), spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Totally Krossed Out sold four million copies in the US. They were kids, they wore their clothes backwards, and the whole world copied them.
18. Rae Sremmurd
Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, brothers from Tupelo, Mississippi. "Black Beatles" with Gucci Mane hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2016 and became the soundtrack of the Mannequin Challenge. Swae Lee's melodies over Jxmmi's punchy verses is a classic duo split.
19. Kids See Ghosts
Kanye West and Kid Cudi. Their self-titled album came out on June 8, 2018: seven tracks, including "Reborn", a song about coming back from mental illness that went platinum. Short, but a real duo record, not a stack of features.
20. City Girls
Yung Miami and JT, Miami. They released Period and Girl Code in 2018. While JT served a federal sentence, Yung Miami kept the duo going, and "Act Up" (2019) reached No. 26 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on the rhythmic radio chart. Few duos have kept going with one member away, let alone landed a top-30 hit while doing it.

Honorable mentions: Salt-N-Pepa and Migos are often named in these lists but were trios. Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek) and Nice & Smooth are worth a listen once you've worked through the 20.
Famous rap duets: songs by two artists
A duet is one song, not a group. These pairings worked so well that people still call them "duos", and every one of them is a lesson in splitting a song between two voices.
- Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" (1992). From The Chronic. It reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and went platinum, and it introduced most of the world to Snoop.
- Nelly and Kelly Rowland, "Dilemma" (2002). Ten weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and a Grammy win. Rap verses with a sung back-and-forth.
- Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, "Empire State of Mind" (2009). Five weeks at No. 1 and two Grammys, including Best Rap Song. Verses from one, a giant chorus from the other.
- Eminem and Rihanna, "Love the Way You Lie" (2010). Seven weeks at No. 1. The same split as "Empire State": rapped verses, sung hook.
- Jay-Z and Kanye West, "Otis" (2011). Built on Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness", it won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance. The two trade verses like a real duo.
- Post Malone and Swae Lee, "Sunflower" (2018). From Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It reached No. 1 and spent 33 weeks in the top 10, a record at the time.

What makes a great rap duo
Look at the 20 above and the same three things keep showing up.
Contrast. André 3000 and Big Boi, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, Method Man and Redman: two voices that sound nothing alike. When one is smooth, the other is rough. When one sings, the other raps. You always know who's on the mic.
A clean split of the work. Eric B. & Rakim, Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth are rapper-plus-producer duos. One makes the beat, one writes the words, and neither tries to do the other's job.
Back-and-forth. The best duo songs pass the verse like a ball. Short trades, finishing each other's lines, a hook they shout together. It sounds like a conversation, which is why it feels like friendship.
That last part is why so many duos started as friends or brothers. If you want songs about that bond, our list of rap songs about friends picks up where this one stops.
Make your own duo video
You don't need a record deal to hear what you and your best friend sound like as a duo. In Kiravu, duo mode takes one selfie each (or one photo of both of you side by side). Write two verses: person 1 raps the first, person 2 raps the second, and you shout the hook together at the end, the same back-and-forth the duos above built careers on. For a 90s feel, pick the Boom bap beat and the Graffiti alley or Battle stage.
One rule: use photos of yourself and people who agreed. Never a celebrity or anyone on this list. Kiravu won't make a video of a real artist, and it writes an original verse instead of using anyone's song.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the best rap duo of all time?
OutKast is the most common answer, and it tops our list. André 3000 and Big Boi made six albums together, and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below won Album of the Year at the 2004 Grammys, the first time a rap group won it. Eric B. & Rakim, Mobb Deep, Gang Starr and UGK are the usual challengers.
What are some hip hop duos that are still active?
Clipse released Let God Sort Em Out in July 2025, their first album in 15 years. Run the Jewels, Rae Sremmurd and City Girls have all released music in the last decade.
What is the difference between a rap duo and a rap duet?
A duo is a two-person act that releases music under one name, like OutKast or Clipse. A duet is a single song by two separate artists, like Jay-Z and Alicia Keys on "Empire State of Mind". Both are on this page.
Are Migos a duo?
No. Migos were a trio: Quavo, Offset and Takeoff. That is why they are not on this list, even though Quavo and Takeoff also released an album as a pair.
Can I make a rap duo video with a friend?
Yes. In Kiravu you upload one selfie each (or one photo of both of you), write two verses, and get a short video of the two of you rapping them, one verse each. Use your own photos only, never a celebrity. The rap duo name generator gives you a group name for free.
